Frugal Film Project April 2024 - Milford, Ohio

For my April Frugal Film Project roll, I decided to do something different. I shot the entire roll with a red filter on my 50mm f/1.8 lens. I also used a different developer other than Rodinal this time - Ilfosol 3. I’m very familiar with Ilfosol, using it with many of my B&W films. For most films it gives me a nice, sharp, low grain image with maybe a little reduced contrast as compared to Rodinal.

Renee received another commission to paint a mural in the entrance of a Walmart, this time in Milford, Ohio. Not having spent much time in Milford, we decided to head there on a Sunday morning to scope out the town and do a little research. It’s a quaint little downtown with interesting architecture, galleries, and shops. Unfortunately most of them were closed on a Sunday, but we made the most of walking around and exploring.

The red filter really added a lot of contrast to the sky, which I am a big fan of. Without a red or orange filter, skies often are blown out or missing contrast/details in most B&W images.

Milford also has a brewery and distillery. The distillery was closed while we were there, but the brewery was open and we had lunch and a pint there. Yum!

The next stop was a covered bridge just outside of town. Unfortunately it was located on a busy road, with no where to park. So no pictures from me on that location. But we did find a quaint church on the same road, with an abandoned trestle bridge nearby. We also ran into the church caretaker, who talked our ears off (in a good way). The St. Philomena church has quite a history, having burned down twice in the past, both times on Ascension Day. Talk about coincidences! Another interesting fact is that the sign over the door of the “new” church was misspelled when it was made, having a “u” instead of an “o”. No one knows why that happened, but they just went with it and moved on.

While there, I also shot a roll of 620 Fuji Pro 400H in my Kodak Duaflex. A few of those images are below.

Stay tuned for next month’s roll. I’m not certain what the theme will be with that one but I have a few ideas!
